Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, Houston

No matter how old you are, there is a small part of you that wants to know what it feels like to interact with an owl.

Owls are not just cute stuffed toys or creatures in a storybook. The owls at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center are up close and personal, turning their fluffy heads 360 degrees to look you in the eye. And this is only one of the experiences that are hosted by one of Houston’s favorite attractions.

Everything you need to know about edible wild plants, native frog populations, and butterfly host plants can be discovered at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. Nature is the star of the show here. It is fascinating to spend the day looking at the outdoors from a different perspective. Imagine how the world looks like from an insect colony’s or eagle-eyed raptor’s point of view. How do they operate at night? When do they sleep? What happens to them in winter? All these and more are answered by the guides and guest speakers that appear at the HANC every month.

And it’s not only all about nature and native animals at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. They regularly host cooking evenings, because a good deal of the vegetation is edible…and delicious.  Of course, we’d be remiss not mentioning their “barbecue, beer, and bingo” events. That sounds like a tasty combination!

Fans of the Center visit frequently to see the annual migration of birds, and drop off the kids for summer camps. Little ones are also avid HANC fans, with kids’ story time and interactive learning classes. Houston is blessed with some of the most diverse and exciting local wildlife, flora, and fauna—so be sure to visit the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center to discover more about our beautiful outdoors.
